I just read the condolences of Peter Wilson and Nina Morrison (longtime friends of our family), and I was very moved by them.
My connection with Phyllis is that I gave flute lessons to her daughter, Cassie. Phyllis was very supportive of this venture and
encouraged Cassie to practice. She was engaged in the whole procedure and was a delight to know.
I extend my deepest sympathy to all of Phyllis' family, and especially to Cassie.

I was very sad to learn of the passing of my 5th grade teacher Mrs. Ord who I had at North Elementary when the school was brand new. I remember she not only told us what the assignment was, but she also explained why we were learning to do something and how this skill would help us in the future. The picture on her obituary page shows she never changed, but I think she had red hair when I had her. Otherwise, she looks the same. I wasn't surprised to read in her obituary that she "enjoyed all things relating to children and their education and growth as individuals." That statement truly embodies her as a teacher. I knew when I was her student that she cared about me as well as her other students. When students feel their teacher cares about them, they are happier to be there and learn.

To the Ord family,
My sincere condolences at Mrs. Ord’s passing. I have nothing but fond memories of Mrs. Ord who was my 5th grade teacher in Chestnut Ridge. My family had just moved to the United States in 1979, and I was blessed to have her take special care of me during this time of intimidating transition. She was a kind and patient soul who helped me feel secure and welcome, and I am so grateful for having her play an important role in my life.
I wish you peace and comfort,
Joy Orteza

Dear family and friends of Mrs. Ord,
Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of my absolute favorite elementary school teacher. Mrs. Ord and I were both redheads, and she made sure to encourage me to be proud of my red hair, even when other kids made fun of me. I was also a serious student of violin and music, for which I was regularly teased by other students. Mrs. Ord would have none of this and always was my greatest champion. I had trouble reading, but when I found a book about Beethoven, I somehow was able to overcome some of my reading challenges, if only for a short time; however, other kids tried making fun of my book choices. "You're reading a book about Beethoven?!?" they would ask. "Yeah, so?" I would reply. Mrs. Ord made a point of telling me later how proud she was that I didn't cave to such judgmental and ignorant questions.
The bottom line is that Mrs. Ord saw something in me and chose to nurture it at every opportunity, all while knowing that I likely suffered from what would now be diagnosed as ADHD. I also would learn later in life that I have dyslexia, which explains why I never could read fast. Mrs. Ord's support and encouragement gave me the tools to stay the course. "It's not a race," she'd say. She was perhaps more encouraging about my musical and artistic pursuits than any other teacher I had. I can proudly say that Mrs. Ord played an enormous role in my success as a musician. Not only did I achieve three degrees in music, including a doctorate, but I went on to serve as the senior enlisted music advisor to The White House, where I served as a Marine Violinist for 30 years in direct support of five U.S. Presidents (1990-2020).
Thank you, Mrs. Ord, for believing in me and for being such a wonderful and impactful teacher. You will always be a part of who I am. I salute you.
With love, admiration, and gratitude,
Peter Wilson
(former 5th Grade student, Chestnut Ridge Elementary and proud fellow red head)
