Obituary of Nancy "Becky" Rebecca Layman

Please share a memory of Nancy "Becky" to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On November 9, 2023 Heaven gained Nancy Rebecca “Becky” Layman (80) after she peacefully departed while surrounded by her loved ones. Born in Morgantown, WV on July 28, 1943 to her beloved parents, the late Robert Walton Straight and Billie Marie Pierce Straight. Her love continues through her devoted husband of 62 years, Chauncy Allen Layman, Adoring Daughters: Tawny Hoxter and Billie Jo Miker (husband, Joseph Miker III), Loving Grandchildren: Brian Hoxter II (wife, Holly Hoxter), Miranda Hoxter, Major Hoxter, Maleea Miker Tice (husband, Christopher Tice), Marlee Rebecca Miker, Maggie Miker, and Joseph Miker IV, Beloved Great Grandchildren: Kal-El Hoxter, Trey Murphy, LeVon Hoxter, Makilee Miker, Chauncy Miker, Waylon Miker, and Christopher Tice Jr., Faithful Sister: Roberta Straight, many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. In addition to her Parents, Becky was preceded in death by her Dearly Missed Siblings, Sandra Sue Straight Smith and Robert “Robbie” Straight II. Becky graduated from University High School in 1961. She became a dedicated homemaker and farmer. In life you would find her tending to the needs of her farm, family, and community. She made certain anyone she knew never went without including all the animals who bonded with her. Her hand-fed friend, Mommy Squirrel, especially. Along with many perfect gifts she gave her family, she gifted her Sugar Grove community The Little Blue Christmas Tree in the Woods. Becky was an avid historian, seeing and sharing the beauty of things past. She captured her love of many things through photography. She preserved history by creating photo albums of loved ones, God’s creations, memorials, and forgotten places. She created and collected many “treasures” and enjoyed sharing the special stories behind them. She served as Elder and Treasurer to Sugar Grove Presbyterian Church in Laurel Point. Becky remained the faithful caretaker to the Dents Run Cemetery for decades. She wholeheartedly gave countless hours to 4-H, schools, and children's programs where she became everyone's Grandma. Above all, she loved. Becky loved. She loved like the squirrel gathering nuts for her kits. Her love brought warmth like the herding sheep in a snowstorm. She loved like the mouse collecting treasures to build a home. Her love knew no limits like the stars in the sky. She loved like Mother Nature’s forgiveness of our wear. She loved like Jesus’ teachings and examples. She remembered “HE is with me” with every feather she found. She may have left her body, but her voice remains clear, echoing the words of her Grandmother before, “Be pretty”. Be pretty with your thoughts to keep your heart pure. Be pretty to give grace for it’s always due. Finding your pretty may be hard at times so search for Becky’s pretty she left us to find. If you want to find Becky you can find her the next time you see a walnut on the ground, feel the peace of a bluebird in flight, or see the next special moon. You can find her amongst the flowers she sowed, in the quiet early morning hours, or in the moment someone chooses to be pretty. And remember, always look for feathers, chances are she will be there too. A graveside service will be held at Dents Run Cemetery (Zoar) on Sunday, November 12, 2023 at 2:30 pm.
