Obituary of Ronald L. Gooden

Ronald L. Gooden, 78, of Westover, passed away at Mapleshire Nursing Facility on June 17, 2015 with his family at his side. He was born March 24, 1937 in Mill Creek, WV, a son of the late Albert W. and Dorthy (Fincham) Gooden. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (Bolyard) Gooden for 59 years. Ron was a talented woodcarver and a retired manager of Choice Hotel Properties in WV and PA for 20 years. Ron was known as a hard worker and could do most anything. He loved telling his life stories and he loved his family and church. He joined the Air Force in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1962. After the Air Force, Ron completed training in Automobile Diesel Mechanics, a line of work he followed for many years. He also was a welder on Western Maryland and Chessie System Railroads. Ron was a high priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In addition to his wife, Ron is survived by his daughter, Cheryl and husband Paul J. Poling of Westover; sons, Greg Gooden of Garards Fort, PA and Dr. Randall S. Gooden and wife Stacy of Griffin, GA; grandchildren, Laura (Poling) Shelton and husband Josh of Short Gap, WV, Joseph E. Gooden of Provo, UT, William and Michael Gooden of Griffin, GA; two great grandchildren, James and Vanessa Shelton; sisters-in-law, Florence Robison and Mary Lou Savage of Westover and Dorothy Bolyard of Wana, WV; brother-in-law, Russell Swecker of Elkins, WV; friend and neighbor, Roy B. Clarkson of Westover; and many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Ron was preceded in death by four brothers, Burl, Hartzel, Carl, and Glen Gooden; sisters, Helen Shannon and Jean Swecker; and three brothers-in-law, Raymond Bolyard, Elmer Robison and Wilbur Savage. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks for the devoted care given to Ron at Mapleshire Nursing Facility and Amedisys Hospice for their tender loving care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Parksinson’s Foundation Gift Processing Center PO Box 5018 Hagerstown, MD 21741 or Amedisys Hospice 246 Cheat Rd #3 Morgantown, WV 26508. Friends may call at McCulla Funeral Home on Friday, June 19, 2015 from 6-9 PM. Funeral services will take place at McCulla Funeral Home on Saturday at 11 AM with Bishop Reagan Curtis of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints presiding.
