Obituary of Glenda Gray
Please share a memory of Glenda to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Glenda Arlene Gray died on February 25, 2020 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.
Born on April 29, 1940 in Rowlesburg, WV, she was named for her parents, Glenn and Arlene Hathaway, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Lowell Wayne Gray, and by her brother Allan Hathaway.
She is survived by her two sons, James Allan (Jim) of Morgantown and David Lowell and wife Dina of Chandler, AZ; a sister, Julia Zay Thorn of Westover; and a brother, Brandt Hathaway and wife Nok of McMurray, Pa; as well as by her dear friends Reba Thurmond, Connie McCluskey, Carol DeBerry and Mary Neely of Morgantown.
Raised in the small community of Manheim in Preston County, she joined 4-H at the age of 11 and later became an All-Star. A graduate of Rowlesburg High School and Fairmont State College, she began her teaching career in Charleston WV, received a Master’s degree from Marshall University, and did further graduate work at WVU after moving to Morgantown.
After an accident left her unable to teach, she spent several years working at Charlie Brown Flying Service at Morgantown Airport, where she also obtained her pilot’s license. In 1980 she joined Farmers and Merchants Bank – later One Valley Bank – first as a teller and then in the Human Resources Department, until her retirement in 2000. She spent her life loving her family, loving to read and play the piano, and loving her precious cats.
Glenda’s wisher for cremation will be honored through her being a donor to the WVU Human Gift Registry. A later, private internment will take place next to her husband and other family members at the Talbott Community Cemetery in Barbour County.
The family encourages all who would like to honor her memory to donate to the music program at First Christian Church at 100 Coburn Avenue in Morgantown, or to Animal Friends of North Central WV.
