Obituary of Retta "Kay" Nice
Retta Carol “Kay” Nice died on May 19, 2019 in Morgantown. Born in New Martinsville, WV on September 10, 1938 to Drexel and Mae Johnston, she graduated from Magnolia High School and lived, worked and raised her family in Morgantown.
Kay will be remembered for her quick wit and her never-ending passion for the arts, having joyfully spent her free time drawing and painting, enjoying shows at the CAC and always wearing the biggest smile listening to the Pride of West Virginia, WVU’s marching band.
She was married for over 40 years to her love, Larry Nice until his death in 2001. Nothing gave her more joy than raising her two sons, Bill and John, and seeing her grandsons Cameron and Johnston Smith.
Kay worked at WVU’s student loan office for over 20 years where she made many of her lifelong friends. She was also an active member of First Christian Church.
She is survived by her sons Bill (Tara) and John (Mary), her two grandsons, Cameron and Johnston Smith, her sister and brother-in-law Chuck and Pat Mullett and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry, her brothers Jim Johnston and Bill Johnston and her sister, Tip Harpley.
She was forever grateful to the many nurses and caregivers who cared for her in the later years of her life.
