Obituary of Anthony "Tony" Fumich

Anthony “Tony” J. Fumich passed away on July 22, 2018 at his home in Morgantown, WV at the age of 97. He was born in Pursglove, WV to the late George and Madeline Fumich.

He joined the Army Air Corp in 1942 and became a pilot flying the largest cargo plane at the time, the C-46.

He piloted and commanded a crew in the transportation of troops and supplies into enemy territory during World War II. He completed 4 combat missions in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre of Operations with the 5th Air Force.

One of his favorite stories was when escaping Japanese fighter planes, he deliberately headed into a typhoon and managed to fly all the way through it. Upon landing, his commander told him he was the only pilot he knew that ever made it through one.

After being discharged as a 2nd lieutenant in 1946, he attended WVU and graduated with a degree in Mining Engineering and began his career as a mine inspector for the Federal Bureau of Mines retiring as a Health and Safety Supervisor.

He is survived by his daughters Susan Corey of Parkersburg, WV, Diana Romig and husand Bruce of Dallas, TX, Rebecca Bishop  and husband Dave of New Alexandria, PA, Jane Beebe and husband Bob of Berkeley Springs, WV, son Anthony J. Fumich, Jr. and wife Julie of Caldwell, ID; brother Joseph of Michigan; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Kathleen; brothers: George, William, Steve, Edward, and a sister Mary Murphy.

McCulla Funeral Home has provided cremation services and a graveside service will be held at a later date.
