Please share a memory of William "Skip" to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

William B. “Skip” McCulla, III, age 84 of Westover, passed away Friday, September 8, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.  He was born December 10, 1932 in Morgantown, a son of the late William B. McCulla Jr. and Nell Jenkins McCulla.

Skip was a longtime Westover resident and public servant. He was a graduate of Morgantown High School and was a Korean War Veteran serving with the United States Marine Corp. He served as a deputy sheriff and was a retired Morgantown Police Officer with 22 years of service. At the time of his death he was the oldest surviving police officer in Monongalia County.  Following his retirement, he was a Monongalia County School Bus driver for nearly twenty years and also enjoyed working at McCulla Funeral Home.

Skip was very patriotic and an active participant in military and patriotic ceremonies.  He was equally happy whether riding in a parade with a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient or showing elementary school children the proper method of flag folding.  Skip was an active member in the Marine Corp League, Monongalia Detachment # 342 where he served as the Charter Commandant.  He took special pride in being named Detachment Marine of the Year for 2011 for “outstanding dedication and donation to Mon County Detachment #342.”  He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge # 87, the American Legion, and the VFW.  He was also a 50 year member of the Morgantown Union Lodge # 4 AF & AM, the Scottish Rite of Wheeling, and the Shriners.  He also served many years on the Westover Police Civil Service Commission. Skip was also a lifelong history aficionado with a special interest in the Civil War and World War II.

Skip is survived by his wife of 63 years, JoAnn Rhodes McCulla, two sons, Bill McCulla and wife Marci of Westover, Jim McCulla and wife Sharon of Morgantown, and daughter, Marcie Lipscomb and husband Keith of Westover, six grandchildren, Megan McCulla and husband Lucas, Kate Slaughter and husband Larkin, Ashley Voithofer and husband Joey, Matthew McCulla, Savannah Lipscomb and Marissa Lipscomb; great grandchildren, Charlie McCulla, Elizabeth McCulla and soon to arrive Cecelia Voithofer; and sisters-in-law, Janet Lemons and husband Clinton “Mack” and Judy Shea and husband Larry.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to caregivers Sue and Keith Wright, Marie Bryant, Mary Luzader, and Tammy Hunnel, Delores Matheny, Mapleshire Nursing Home, and Amedysis Hospice for the love and care shown to Skip.

The family requests that those desiring to make donations do so to the Monongalia Detachment #342 Marine Corp League, P.O. Box 1507, Morgantown, WV  26507.

Friends are invited to gather in support of the family at McCulla Funeral Home, 770 Fairmont Road, Westover on Sunday, September 10th from 2-4 & 7-9 pm and again on Monday, from 10 am until the 11 am funeral service with Rev.
