Obituary of John Albert Core
John Albert Core, age 66, of Morgantown, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born February 17, 1951 in Camp Rucker, AL a son of the late Alfred C. Core and Ruth Stubblefield Core Thompson.
John worked as a Library Associate for the West Virginia University Library from which he retired in March of this year with 41 years of service. He was a longtime member of the First Christian Church of Morgantown, where he served as a deacon and then an Elder. John was a lifelong lover of music, and his desire to be part of it eventually led to his discovery of his talent for poetry. He enjoyed writing hymn texts and was recognized several times for his work. He was a Life Member of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada.
John is survived by one sister, Sheila Core of Williamsport, PA, one step-sister, Linda Sypolt and husband Greg of Reedsville, one step-brother, James Thompson and wife Lucy of Morgantown, niece, Katrina Kerstetter and husband David, nephews, David Sypolt and wife Terri Funk Sypolt, and Michael, Jeffrey, and Nicholas Thompson and several great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by one brother, David C. Core and his step-father, James H. Thompson.
In honoring John’s wishes, McCulla Funeral Home has provided cremation services.
Friends may gather at McCulla Funeral Home on Saturday, June 3, from 2 pm until the 3 pm memorial service with Pastor Lisa Sheldon officiating.
