Obituary of Ethel Mae Hawkins

Please share a memory of Ethel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On January 11, 2017 Ethel Mae Provance Hawkins left us to dance with her love of 65 years. Born Oct. 23, 1928 in Smithfield, Pennsylvania, Ethel Mae was the fourth child among five siblings in a family that loved to laugh, dance and live life to its fullest. She attended Georges Township High School and was a majorette in the marching band. While small in stature but mighty in spirit, she attracted the unwavering love of Forrest Edward “Squirt” Hawkins. They began their adventurous life together on May 25, 1947. They wed in an airplane circling the Hawkins Dairy Farm piloted by Ralph Albertazzi, who would later fly Air Force One. Her husband called her “Es,” her nieces and nephews called her Aunt Essie and to others she asked to be called Ethel Mae, never preferring just Ethel. As the wife of a farmer and carpenter, she was the epicenter of the family. Forrest and Ethel Mae had three children. Her first-born son was named Edward Alan, after her husband Forrest Edward. Three years later a daughter, Linda Ann, was born, named after an aunt and her younger sister. To complete the family, Terry Joe “TJ” was born, named after her oldest son insisted on a brother named Joe. As an accomplished seamstress, she made costumes for all the May Day festivities and Christmas pageants at Easton Elementary School, and the Halloween costumes she created were the envy of her children’s classmates. All of these memories were well preserved in the countless pictures she took of the students and teachers. Later she became a 4-H leader of the Easton-Avery 4-H Club serving the community and the county as a counselor at Camp Muffly. Ethel Mae joined the workforce as a teller at Farmers & Merchants Bank. When the bank opened their first drive-thru windows, they placed her in the booth closest to Spruce Street, giving her a special platform to stand on so that she could see her clients. Every month she created special decorations for her window making sure her love of the WVU Mountaineers was well known, especially during football season. Her regular clients would wait in long lines just to see her smiling face and enjoy her friendly conversation. After raising her three children, Ethel Mae next focused on traveling and spending quality time with Forrest and their friends. They enjoyed many trips together with the Masons and the Shriners. These trips took them to places near and far, and once again she would document every outing with lots of pictures. On the weekends, you could find Ethel Mae and Forrest at the local Moose or Elks club. If she wasn’t attending the WVU football game, she was certainly surrounded by friends cheering on her beloved Mountaineers. Win or lose, she always bought a sweatshirt to show her support for the team. When her grandchildren came into her life, she focused all her energy on them. Her four grandchildren - Bill Katy, Britney and Nick - gave her great joy, and she delighted in spending time with them. Her passion for shopping and Hallmark ornaments was evident every Christmas and birthday. If any of them needed anything, she would provide it for them. As always she was generous with her time and resources. The family became complete with the addition of two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Jake. Even in her final years, a sparkle came to her eyes when they visited her. Ethel is survived by her daughter, Linda Ann Hawkins Dimmick and husband W. Fred Dimmick, II of Chapel Hill, NC; sons, Dr. Edward Alan Hawkins of Morgantown and Terry Joe “TJ” Hawkins and Sharon Sunderland of Reedsville, WV; sister, Shirley Ann Skapes of Strongsville, OH; grandchildren, William Forrest “Bill” Dimmick, Kathryn Ann “Katy” Jones and husband Scott, Britney Lynn Dimmick Passante and husband David, and Nickolas “Nick” Edward Hawkins; and great grandchildren, Tyler Warren Jones and Jacob Forrest “Jake” Jones. In addition to her parents, Ethel Mae was preceded in death by her husband Forrest “Squirt” Hawkins who passed away in 2013; sisters, Blanche Ellen Peake and Mary Frances Magie; and brothers, William Arthur Provance and Lloyd Minor Provance. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Rowlesburg Park at P.O. Box 164 Rowlesburg, WV 26425 or 4-H Camp Muffly c/o Rachel Mitchell at 1477 4-H Camp Rd. Morgantown, WV 26508. Friends may gather at McCulla Funeral Home on Friday, January 13, 2017 from 4-7pm and on Saturday from 10am until the 11am funeral with Rev. Harold George officiating. Cremation services will then be provided by McCulla Funeral Home and burial will take place at Beverly Hills Cemetery at a later date. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.McCulla.com.
