Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
William Mealey Bland (Pap), 89, died Monday, October 10, 2016 at his home on River Road in Morgantown, WV. During his life, he was very fortunate to have shared the love of two amazing women. His wife of 61 years and the mother of his four children, Ruth (Swanger) Bland, who died in 2009, and Ina Lamp with whom he shared his life for the past four years. In addition to Ina, he is survived by his four children, Deanna (Dee) and Bob Cress, Bill Bland, Judy and Bill Stewart, and Mark and Tammy Bland. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Brenda, Brian, Nicole, Rob, Mandy, Michael, Misty, Jeramiah, and Josh; 15 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and his devoted four –legged buddy, Nevins. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Vernish, and an infant grandson, Matthew. Bill was born in Ireland, WV, the son of J.O. Bland and Mona Mealey Bland. In his early years, his family moved to the Morgantown area where he attended school until joining the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He celebrated his 18th birthday on the battlefield. He was proud of his service to his country. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Marines remained with him throughout his life. After the war, he returned to Morgantown and married his childhood sweetheart, Ruth, in 1947. Although his passion was driving the “big rig” he was employed in many different fields during his lifetime and was owner and operator of Bland’s Garage, Bland’s Trucking, and Highway Sales. He helped organize River Road Volunteer Fire Department and served as their fire chief. After his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking and handcrafted many beautiful pieces. He also enjoyed many hours working with his model trains. Pap loved animals, good food, and socializing with friends. He particularly enjoyed the Sunday coffee and cookie visits with Clarence Triplett. He loved a good story and had a smile that was contagious. The family expresses gratitude to Wendy High and Paula LeMasters, and Amedisys Hospice for their care and kindness shown during Pap’s last days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Pap’s memory to the Kingdom Lunchbox Program for Skyview Elementary, 540 Fairmont Rd. Westover, WV 26501. In honoring Bill’s wishes cremation services were provided by McCulla Funeral Home. Friends may gather at Kingdom Evangelical Methodist Church, 540 Fairmont Rd.
