Gary Michael Williams, 66, of Morgantown, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2016 at Monongalia General Hospital with his loving wife by his side. Gary was born September 7, 1949 in Welch, WV, the son of Opal Williams, who currently resides in Lynchburg, VA, and the late Braston L. Williams. Gary fought a very arduous and courageous 19-month battle against lung cancer. He leaves behind his college sweetheart and devoted wife of 44 years, Marilyn Williams. He is also survived by his loving sister Linda Boyers, of Lynchburg, VA; two sisters-in-law in Florida, Carol Hoon and Sheryl Wells; and a brother-in-law, Steven Carothers and wife Gail in Maine. In addition he is survived by a niece, Michelle Carothers in Florida; a nephew, Danny Boyers and wife Doris, and their 4 little girls in Virginia; a niece Angel Ege and her 3 children in Pennsylvania, and a nephew, Jeffrey Hoon and wife Casey and their son in Florida. Gary was a very proud veteran of the U.S. Navy. He served his country honorably for 4 years as a Communication Technician with the Naval Security Group while stationed in Florida, Alaska, and Guam. Additionally, he volunteered to do temporary duty alongside the Third Marine Division in Vietnam. It was during this assignment that he was wounded twice and received 2 Purple Hearts. As a graduate of West Virginia University, Gary earned an undergraduate degree in Political Science and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. Following graduation, Gary was employed by the Monongalia County Commission where he supervised cleanup of the Mon County Flood in the early 1980’s and helped to acquire the funding necessary to build the current Mon General Hospital. He later served the federal government for 32 years as a very loyal and knowledgeable computer expert for the Morgantown CDC/NIOSH facility. He began as a SAS Statistical Programmer, and was later responsible for installing the first computer network for the Morgantown facility, as well as recommending, purchasing, installing, and maintaining all the PC’s on the premises. Gary had a warrior’s heart. He had a strong sense of right and wrong, was fiercely loyal to those he cared for, and was always looking out for the underdog. He was a leader, a visionary with a strong sense of history and politics. He was intelligent, hard-working, dedicated and was blessed with an incredibly wonderful sense of humor and storytelling ability that brought joy to all he encountered. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Gary’s memory payable to the Zelda Stein Weiss Cancer Center, 1200 JD Anderson Dr. Morgantown, WV 26505. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to all of the Mon General doctors and staff members who were involved in Gary’s care. Friends may call at the McCulla Funeral Home, 770 Fairmont Road, Morgantown from 6-8 pm Wednesday and on Thursday from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am funeral service with Pastor Dan Meadows officiating. Burial will follow at East Oak Grove Cemetery with graveside military honors conferred by the United States Navy Honor Guard and Westover VFW Post # 9916.
