Roger William Tuomala, born May 9, 1951, passed away Sunday, June 18, 2023 at the age of 72, surrounded by his family at Mon Health Medical Center following a brief illness. Roger recently moved to Fairmont from Morgantown, WV but spent most of his years raising his family in New Martinsville, WV. He leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Barbara (Shumaker), his three children Christine (Brian) Haufe of Morgantown, WV, Michael (Diana Fiorentino) Tuomala of Webster, MA, and Lisa (Josh) Bucher of Mannington, WV, and his grandchildren Alexis, Zachary, and Cooper Haufe, Clara, Davis, and Eleanor Tuomala, and Kaden, Madison, and Avery Bucher. Roger is also survived by his sister Carol (Tom) Birce of Lynchburg, VA, sisters-in-law Marianne Jackson and Patti Snoke, both of Lancaster, OH, and many loved nieces and nephews. Roger is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Doris (Ojala) Tuomala. He was born in Cleveland, OH and a proud alumnus of The Ohio State University. He was a mechanical engineer and supervisor in the power house at PPG, Natrium Plant for 35 years before retiring to travel the world with Barbara,and spend time with his grandchildren. Roger did not know a stranger. With his easy laugh, generous spirit, and gregarious personality he made everyone he met feel like a friend. He was quick to help any who needed it without questions, recognition, or asking for anything in return. Roger led by example, and simply by living a life filled with kindness, encouraged those around him to do the same. He enjoyed going on large family vacations each year, where the house would be filled with laughter. Roger could be found off to the side, relishing the chaos (and maybe instigating it), with a twinkle in his eye. Children were drawn to Roger because he delighted in mischief and never lost his sense of wonder. His grandchildren looked forward to spending time with him where they would share inside jokes, play games, and trade nicknames. Roger met Barbara on campus at Ohio State and they were married in August of 1972. Together, they modeled an exemplary marriage, filled with love and respect through the good times and bad. Barbara was the love of his life and he looked at her with adoration every single day of their 51 years. Love leaves a memory, and they created as much love as they could and his absence leaves many memories to be cherished. A celebration of Roger’s life is being planned by his family for later this summer.
