Obituary of Matilda Staggs

Matilda Mary Staggs, age 97, of Rutherfordton, NC, formerly of Westover, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at Rutherfordton Regional Hospital. Matilda was born in Kingwood on January 13, 1926, a daughter of the late Michael and Mary Corona Castagneri. Matilda worked as an Operator for Morgantown Telephone Company for many years. She was also a member of the former St. Theresa’s Catholic Church and also at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. She was a loving mother and grandmother who loved spending time with her family and will be greatly missed. Matilda is survived by her daughter, Kathy Whitlock of Rutherfordton, NC; sister, Agatha Keenan of Birmingham, AL; and grandchildren, David Longfellow, Michael Staggs, Jr., Laura Whitlock, and Charlotte Whitlock. In addition to her parents, Matilda was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Staggs; daughter, Patricia Ann Longfellow; son, Michael Marvin Staggs; and brothers, Andrew Castagneri and James Castagneri. Friends may gather at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church on Thursday, February 16, 2023 from 10 am until the 11 am Mass of Christian Burial with Msgr. Anthony Cincinnati as celebrant. Burial will follow at the WV National Cemetery in Pruntytown, WV. McCulla Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and online condolences may be sent to the family at www.McCulla.com
